Local elections 2024: First local elections in five and a half years
Poles elected local authorities for the first time since 2018 – the last time Poles elected municipal and county councils and provincial assemblies was on October 21, 2018.
The term of office of local governments, extended before the 2018 elections to five years (from four), was supposed to end in the fall of 2023, but the Sejm of the previous term extended it by half a year to avoid the election campaign before the local government elections coinciding with the campaign before the parliamentary elections. Hence, the term of office of local governments ultimately lasted five and a half years and was the longest in the history of the Third Polish Republic.

The vote on April 7 does not end the local government elections – on April 21, voters will go to the polls wherever it was not possible to elect a commune head, mayor or city president in the first round.
What were the results of the previous local government elections?
In 2018, the local elections at the level of provincial assemblies were won by PiS with the support of 34.13%. Second place was taken by KO, with 26.97% of votes cast. voters.
