In February he appeared confident of implementing all the new measures to tackle fan violence, however, the much-hyped digital ID has been extended
On February 8th, the Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis, on the occasion of the government’s new measures to deal with fan violence, categorically stated to the sports radio station Spor FM: “If on March 7th the cameras are not working in the stadiums and on April 9th there is no identification, then you can hang me on the press pegs.”
G. Vroutsis was in a hurry and… hanged himself. The new cameras were installed and are working in the Super League stadiums, however the measure of digital identification of the fans going to the stadium was extended until the end of the season, following a request from the 14 PAE of the SL1. And this is where the popular saying “Eat a big bite, don’t talk a lot” applies. For Greek football, after all, dozens of laws have been passed and hundreds of measures have been announced that were either not implemented or implemented with tolerance.
More careful
Since last February when the stadiums were opened again for the fans it is a fact that there have been no serious incidents, while an extreme penalty was also imposed. PAOK was punished with one game behind closed doors (it served on the 1st game of the playoffs) for a firecracker that fell in the derby with Olympiakos without the match being stopped even temporarily. The teams and their fans are careful not to close their stadium.
The Lamia – AEK match was held behind closed doors because the cameras were not installed in time, however, despite the relevant announcements, from April 9 entry to the Super League stadiums will not only be done digitally with the Gov.gr Wallet ticket for identification every fan. Until the end of the current season and in order for there to be a transitional period, fans will enter the stadium in the traditional way, that is, with the ticket in hand. That’s because with the digital ticket it was certain that people would form lines outside the gates of the stadiums of the Big 4. Until now, the seats of the big ones in the playoff games are full or almost full because of the interest that exists at the top of the league and digital identification would cause grumbling. And the government decided to freeze it at least until the end of May.
“The first step in dealing with fan violence was the passing of the law, the second the cameras. Now we go to the next step, that of identity. We agreed to go into a transitional stage of adjustment. In the transitional stage, the identity law will be applied, but the old system will also apply, so that everyone can adapt to the new system,” G. Vroutsis said midweek on the matter, who at the beginning of February stated at a press conference: “On April 9th comes the third big change, identity. With this change, we will now know the name, surname, phone number of anyone who enters the stadium”. Two months later the government hit back…
“There will be a reaction”
In the sheet of March 31, Documento revealed that FIFA and UEFA have once again put on the table the possibility of Grexit in Greek football, because the penalties imposed on the PAE by a committee of the GAA, DEAB, constitute interference in self-government. The president of the EPO, Takis Baltakos, was placed on the subject, who stated: “Certainly what the DEAB is doing affects the self-government of football. And there will definitely be a reaction from FIFA – UEFA”. At the moment the government pretends not to have heard the bell.
“If on March 7th the cameras do not work in the stadiums and on April 9th there is no identification, then you can hang me on the pegs” declared the minister.
