AS Monaco Victorious Against Rennes: Retains Top Spot on Ligue 1 Podium

At the end of a rather dull afternoon of Ligue 1, AS Monaco did well. Keeping pace with its first pursuer, Lille, the club from the principality is still firmly established on the podium, at six days of the end of the championship. It notably widens the gap on Nice, which missed against Reims. Further down in the ranking, Montpellier has given itself a real breath of fresh air.

Monaco was hot against Rennes

In an electric end to the match, AS Monaco retained the essentials this Sunday: their victory against Rennes (1-0) and their place on the podium. Le Rocher once again owes its success to the left foot of Maghnes Akliouche, author of his seventh goal of the season (25th). But he then suffered in the second half, ten against ten, after the expulsions of Martin Terrier (47th) on the Rennais side then Thilo Kehrer (64th).

In added time, the Bretons actually pushed to get the equalizer, in the wake of a voluntary Désiré Doué but too clumsy in the final gestures. Still as inconsistent, Julien Stéphan’s men suffered another defeat, remaining in ninth place before OL-Nantes and seeing Europe slip away. For ASM, undefeated for six games in the league, this new success allows them to get back ahead of Lille in the race for the Champions League.

Nice slowed down by Reims

Still in the running for the Champions League, the OGCN made another bad move against Reims, conceding a draw (0-0). The blank score, however, does not reflect the dynamics of this meeting between two playful teams, who were resolutely offensive (ten shots from Reims compared to 18 for the Azuréens) and each had serious opportunities to win.

The end of the match, in particular, was particularly eventful. In the 87th minute, Khéphren Thuram’s header proved too soft to open the scoring for Nice, even if it hit the target… A few minutes later, on the other side of the field, it was Marcin Bulka who scored. had to intervene in front of Reda Khadra to maintain the draw. With this result, the Gym, which has won only one of its last nine matches, now sees itself left behind by Monaco and Lille, its main competitors. Reims maintains its seventh place.

Montpellier distance Lorient

Opposed to Lorient, 16th and first play-off in Ligue 1, Montpellier had a suitable opportunity to take shelter for the maintenance, this Sunday. With cold realism, the MHSC seized it (2-0), winning in the second half thanks to a goal from Téji Savanier on a penalty (54th) then a counter from Yann Karamoh at the end of the match (90th + 1). With six points ahead of their evening opponent, the Héraultais can look forward to the end of the season more calmly.

For the Merlus, who had the best chances at the start of the match, this scenario inevitably leaves regrets. Régis Le Bris’ men will particularly regret this penalty awarded for a foul on Ayman Kari (9th) and finally canceled by the VAR in a contentious manner. If they were probably the most convincing in the game, the result is clear: they are still two points behind Nantes.

Toulouse and Strasbourg barren

In a match largely dominated by defenses and very poor in chances, Toulouse and Strasbourg must be satisfied with having ended the match with a goalless score (0-0). The meeting also ended at a leisurely pace, since neither team was playing for survival. As a symbol, these two clubs which were unable to decide between themselves therefore remain side by side in the ranking, in the soft underbelly with the same number of points (33): 11th, TFC is only ahead of Racing, 12th, at the goal difference.
