Vucic is considering bringing back the death penalty in Serbia – 2024-04-08 05:51:36

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday that after returning from Paris, he will send a written request to the government for legislative changes that provide for the death penalty, N1 reports.

These changes to the Penal Code will then be sent to Parliament for debate and a vote.

The punishment will apply to cases like the one with the murder of 2-year-old Danka Ilić, or those who committed the same crimes in schools in Serbia.

He said he advocated and asked the government to discuss the matter with the Council of Europe to see if it is possible to reintroduce the death penalty, but without Serbia suffering consequences or being punished for it.

“I will repeat the request in writing as soon as I return from Paris and send it to the government of Serbia, so that once the government is formed, they can consider whether they would bring such a proposal to the National Assembly with the changes and additions to the Criminal Code codex or not,” he told TV Informer.

However, Vucic acknowledged that opponents of the death penalty also have a point.

This applies to cases where after 10, 20 or 30 years after the execution of such a sentence it turns out to be a mistake. This, according to the president, is a much greater sin than punishing someone with a lighter sentence a thousand times over.”
