Samsung Takes Back Global Smartphone Leadership from Apple with Release of Galaxy S24 Models

Last year was the first time that Apple led the mobile market on an annual basis, while Samsung slipped back to second place. However, it looks like the release of the Galaxy S24 models had a good effect on the sales numbers of the South Korean manufacturer.

In 2023, a total of 229.2 million iPhones were sold, while Samsung mobile phones sold a little less, 225.4 million. Rounded off, both companies represented 20% of the market with these figures, while a year earlier Samsung stood at 22% and Apple at 19%.

It would be too early to estimate what the situation will be this year on an annual basis, but it looks like 2024 has started quite well for Samsung. The Galaxy S24 models proved to be successful, sales exceeded last year’s numbers of the Galaxy S23 series, and thus, unsurprisingly, Apple was also overtaken.

A Counterpoint Research according to his calculations, Samsung sold a total of 19.69 million Galaxy smartphones in February, which is 20% of the total market, while 17.41 million iPhones were sold, which represents an 18% share.

Samsung is particularly strong in Europe, where they reached 34%, meaning that every third phone sold was a Galaxy. And Apple performs best in the USA, where they continue to lead the market, but their share fell from 64% to 48% between January and February.

We also got an estimate of exactly how many Galaxy S24 models could have been sold, roughly 6.53 million units were bought worldwide by the end of February.
