BMW M Challenge: Petrol, Diesel, or Hybrid? Ultimate Road Test Comparison

The challenge between these BMWs is definitive and with a verdict that is difficult to dispute. Road tests for the petrol, diesel and hybrid versions

The story of the model protagonist of this challenge was born under the sign of Motorsport and the various versions that have been reproduced have always demonstrated that they can compete anywhere. But no one would have ever expected the internal clash between these BMW titans, recognized as examples of enormous success.

In fact, they ended up on the track three versions of BMW M, petrol, diesel and hybrid, giving fans of the German brand unforgettable emotions. Those who placed them next to each other at the start were those who manage the YouTube account @carwow, who are well versed in the world of motoring.

It came out of it a historic and definitive challenge, which will allow each person to understand which of the three versions is actually the best on certain points. Until now, we could talk about their differences especially in theoretical terms, but practice on the street has given a verdict from which in the future we can take inspiration to describe these three versions.

BMW M, which is the best among the hybrid ones, petrol or diesel?

The question arises spontaneously as soon as a car manufacturer creates a new model and this can only lead to a comparison with others based on their technical characteristics. Once on the road, however, the situation can be turned upside down, even if it is never easy to change the forecasts made by expert technicians in the automotive sector.

BMWs with the three numbers added to the M acronym are slightly higher performing compared to other models. Carwow wondered which were the best and for this reason wanted to test them on a 400 meter track. The M340i, the M340d and the 330e plug-in hybrid ended up in the race, each with different characteristics.

La M340d Touring features a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine capable of delivering up to 430 HP and 850 Nm. The sedan M340i, instead, it is 187 kg lighter than it (since it weighs 1,758 kg) and has 6 in-line cylinders just like the previous one. The difference lies in the horsepower, 477 HP, and the torque, of 630 Nm, as well as, obviously, in the power supply. La 330e plug-in – weighing 1,740 kg – instead, it sports an engine with just four cylinders aligned with an electric motor to be able to turn the rear wheels.

The challenge ended with several interesting ideas that don’t decide a real winner. In fact, over 400 meters it is the petrol sedan, with 12 seconds, that reaches the best time, with the diesel one behind, 3 tenths away, and finally the hybrid one, which managed to conclude this challenge with 12.7 seconds upon arrival. In the rolling start race, however, each of them achieved a record: the 340 petrol one on the start, achieved at 80 km/h; the diesel on torque superiority, in sixth gear; the hybrid in the final run, in eighth gear.
