As American biologists have established, young brain cells die 45 times faster than old ones.

In a new study, posted V Nature Neuroscience, experts have determined the reason for this. They inflicted lethal damage to the DNA of old cells to understand what effect age has on the mechanisms of their death. As it turned out, young cells died within 24 hours after receiving injury, and old cells died within 45 days from the same damage.
Experts have suggested that one of the possible reasons for the persistence of old cells for such a long time is their age. These cells persist throughout their lives and accumulate DNA damage during this period. The older they are, the more “experienced” they are, the researchers say.
The authors called this discovery shocking. In their opinion, it will help create a new method for reversing or preventing many neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, experts will have to figure out whether prolonged cell death is a good sign or not.
