Asturians Lose Fear of Covid and Flu: 156,000 Fewer Vaccines Administered this Past Winter

Asturians lose fear of covid and flu: 156,000 fewer vaccines this past winterDavid Cabo

Asturians have lost fear of the flu and Covid, as shown by the fact that they were vaccinated less this past winter: 126,000 less against the coronavirus and 30,000 less against the flu. In return, immunization with antibodies against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has achieved great success, which was received by 96.5% of the babies for whom it was indicated in order to prevent bronchiolitis.

The Government of Asturias made public this morning the vaccination data from this past autumn-winter campaign. The Health Service of the Principality of Asturias (Sespa) closed the 2023-2024 vaccination campaign on March 31 with 452,146 doses administered to prevent complications derived from seasonal flu, COVID19 and respiratory syncytial virus. Coverage has been significantly good in four of the target groups to which it was especially aimed: people over 65 years of age, residents of senior centers, pregnant women and newborns.

Gripe

The flu vaccine, with 261,662 doses administered, has been the most used. With the use of different sera depending on the health situation of the patients, 95.2% of people residing in senior centers have been immunized, and 65% of those who are 65 years old. This coverage is 10% lower than that of 2023, but is 15% higher than that achieved in the years prior to the pandemic.

Good response in pregnant women, weak in children

The flu vaccine has also had a very good response among pregnant women, with 2,870 doses administered. However, it has had a weaker reception among children under five years of age, with 8,894 vaccines and a coverage of 35.7%. In this case, it is necessary to highlight that this was the first campaign in which it was recommended to administer protection to this age group.

Covid-19

The vaccine against COVID19 has been the second most used, with 186,144 doses. Coverage among nursing home users has been 93%, with 12,226 doses given, and 76.7% among those over 80 years of age, with 63,598 doses used. In this case, the campaign remains open to make it easier for immunosuppressed people to receive the second dose.

respiratory syncytial virus (VRS)

Immunization with antibodies against RSV, which causes most bronchiolitis in babies, entered the vaccination schedule for the first time this season. Both coverage and the reduction of complications derived from this disease among newborns have been excellent. 96.5% of the babies for whom it was indicated have received the medication, with 4,340 doses applied.
