Unusual 4.8 Earthquake in New Jersey Sends Aftershock to New York City – USGS Reports

NEW YORK – After the unusual 10:20 am tremor of 4.8 with an epicenter in New Jersey that was felt in New York City and others in the northeastern United States, an aftershock of intensity 4.0 and lasting at least 5 seconds was felt at 6 pm sharp.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) government agencythis new earthquake had the epicenter 7 kilometers southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey.

The city’s alert service had warned of possible aftershocks through cell phone messages.

The morning tremor, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, was the strongest to hit New York City in 140 years, according to Won-Young Kim, a seismologist at Columbia University. In 1884 a 5.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in the northeast of the country from Maine to Maryland. This area is not considered seismic activity.
