A blessing in disguise, that is what made Miriam Long a millionaire in one fell swoop. The American made a mistake by pressing the wrong button and won no less than 1 million dollars.
Miriam Long, an American woman from Christiansburg, Virginia, initially wanted to play Mega Millions, one of America’s largest lottery games. The main prize to be won? About 893 million dollars or 823 million euros.
She was very disappointed when she noticed that she had pressed the wrong button on the machine. She did not participate in Mega Millions but in Powerball, another game of chance.
But that disappointment quickly turned to euphoria: Even though she let the machine pick numbers randomly, she got all five numbers (10-17-20-39-44) correct. Only the so-called powerball – she needed number 16 – was wrong. To put it into context: according to the lottery, the chance of getting six numbers right is about 1 in 292.2 million.
So incredibly small. But Long still won no less than 1 million dollars (or 922,000 euros) due to the error at the machine in Blacksburg. Speaking to the lottery, Long called it her best mistake ever. “My heart is in my throat, I still don’t fully realize what happened to me.”
And the store where she bought the winning ticket also shares in the prizes: it receives a bonus of $ 10,000 from the lottery.
