This April 4, the Minister of the Interior of Guatemala, Francisco Jiménez, and the Minister of National Defense of Colombia, Iván Velásquez, signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in security and institutional strengthening.
The signing of this document is done within the framework of the strengthening of inter-institutional relations and international cooperation that Jiménez has promoted. According to the authorities, this agreement contributes to the planning, development and execution of policies for the exchange of experiences and cooperation between security institutions.
It seeks to establish the bases for technical and police cooperation and mutual support in the transfer of information and intelligence on the illicit trafficking of drugs, firearms, ammunition and explosives. In addition, support in education, police careers, training and training, officials said.

According to the signed document, the coordination and monitoring of activities by Guatemala will be in charge of the Fifth Vice Ministry of the Ministry of the Interior, while by Colombia, through the Area of International Police Relations and Cooperation of the National Police. The execution and operationalization of the work, by the General Directorate of the National Civil Police of Guatemala, and the Police Intelligence Directorate of the National Police of Colombia
The commitment establishes the process exchange mechanism to improve the performance, respect and promotion of human rights by police institutions.
It also addresses issues related to the transfer of security technology and the reciprocity of practical experiences, advice and support in information and communications technologies.
The memorandum will be valid for five years, automatically renewable for an equal period or as long as the authorities agree.
