Saturday 6 April marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s victory in Eurovision with the song “Waterloo”.
To celebrate, the whole world will be invited to participate in an international digital sing-a-long, while a physical sing-a-long concert will take place in Kungsträdgården at 4pm with tribute band Waterloo.
– It is fitting that Stockholmers get to thank ABBA during this strong music year we have in Stockholm, where the concert scene is flourishing like never before with an outstanding lineup of around 90 Swedish and international major artists in 2024 and many more besides, says Caroline Strand, acting CEO for the Stockholm Business Region.
The guard parade takes part
The notes of “Waterloo” will sound from the guard parade at the castle, and the pedestrian crossings at the King’s Garden will tick to the beat of the music.
Information boards around the city will also pay tribute to ABBA’s importance to both music and Stockholm. In addition, people from all over the world can participate in the global digital campaign by singing their favorite ABBA song or sharing their ABBA memories via hashtags such as #Stockholmsingalong, #ThankyoufortheMusic, and #Waterloo50th.
6 April – a historic day
50 years ago ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton. Soon after the win, the group topped charts across Europe and reached the top ten in the US.
ABBA established themselves in the world after winning in 1974 and continue to inspire musicians and new listeners with their songs, musicals and films.
With 31 million listens on Spotify per month, ABBA’s music continues to be played all over the world.
