The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales landed this Wednesday morning at the Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas airport after anticipating his return from the Dominican Republic. Agents from the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard have waited at the foot of the track for the former Spanish football leader and have transferred him as a detainee to police stations in a black van.
The agents have informed him of his accusation within the framework of the Brody operation, after which he has been released pending the Majadahonda judge summoning him to testify in the coming days, sources close to the case have confirmed to Infobae Spain. Judge Delia Rodrigo is investigating alleged irregularities in several contracts awarded during her tenure at the RFEF. The UCO attributes to Rubiales the crimes of corruption in business, unfair administration, money laundering and membership in a criminal organization.
It was expected that his arrival in Spain would take place next Saturday, April 6, but Rubiales has decided to bring forward his return to the country. When he landed at the Barajas airport, several UCO agents were waiting for him, who informed him of his arrest and took him to the police station at the airport itself.
The accusations against Rubiales
Investigators have confirmed that under his presidency the RFEF rigged several contracts that it awarded to the construction company Gruconsa, whose administrator is the brother of the person then in charge of the Federation’s legal team. These awards were allegedly made for the diversion of funds through a company owned by former soccer player Francisco Javier Martín Alcaide, alias Nene, a friend and partner of Rubiales. The agents maintain that the former president of the RFEF received “bribes” from these payments.
Among other contracts, two awards are being investigated for a total amount of 900,000 euros to the construction company Gruconsa for the renovation of the La Cartuja estate, headquarters of the Spanish National Soccer Team matches.
On March 20, the UCO arrested seven businessmen and lawyers allegedly linked to the plot. Among them was Tomás González Cueto, a trusted man of Rubiales and external legal advisor to the Federation during the period of the investigated contracts. The agents planned to arrest Rubiales that same day, but the arrest did not occur as the former president of the RFEF was in the Dominican Republic. Investigators went to the country to search his accommodation, where several electronic devices were seized.
After learning of his accusation, he announced that he planned to return to Spain on April 6, although he has finally brought forward his return, which took place this Wednesday. This is the second judicial procedure opened against Rubiales, who in the National Court faces a request for two years and six months in prison for the non-consensual kiss and coercion of the soccer player Jenni Hermoso at the celebration of the last Women’s Soccer World Cup. .
