The Woutertje Pieterse Prize for the most beautiful children’s book of the past year has been awarded to Tjibbe Veldkamp and Mark Janssen for The boy who loved the world. According to the jury, the book is “visual as a film”, contains “not too many words” and is a classic in the making.”

The book is about the little boy Adem who gets to take a look at the world before his birth. He is a ‘possible’ child who can glimpse his existence with the first unexpected kiss from his parents. But real life is in danger of not happening, because his parents lose sight of each other. Adem then gets the chance, as a ‘possible’ child, to convince his parents that they belong together.

Jury chairman Rik van de Westelaken announced the winner in the broadcast of The Language State on NPO Radio 1, which came live from the Children’s Book Museum in The Hague for the occasion. Van de Westelaken mentions The boy who loved the world “a magical book that draws the reader into the story from the first sentences and doesn’t let go.” The jury expects it to become a classic that will be read by many generations.

Author Veldkamp and illustrator Janssen will jointly receive 15,000 euros. The makers of the six children’s books that were also nominated will receive 1,000 euros.
