Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced, on Saturday, the suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, against the backdrop of Ecuadorian police forces storming the Mexican embassy in Quito with the aim of arresting former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glass.
The Mexican President indicated that this action represents a flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty, announcing the immediate suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Mexico intends to resort to the International Court after the police attack on the diplomatic mission.
Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena confirmed that the Mexican government will resort to the International Court of Justice to condemn the actions of the Ecuadorian authorities after the police attack on the Mexican diplomatic mission in Quito, which led to the injury of diplomatic employees.
Bárcena announced that “Mexican diplomatic staff in Ecuador will leave this country immediately,” expressing Mexico’s hope that Ecuador will provide the necessary guarantees for the staff to leave safely.
Political asylum
In a remarkable move, the Mexican government decided, on Friday, to grant political asylum to former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in Quito since last December and requested protection due to the persecution and accusations he faced.
This move comes after the Ecuadorian government asked Mexico to allow security forces to enter the embassy and arrest Glass, which led to escalating tensions between the two countries.
Glass, arguably Ecuador’s most wanted man, faces investigations for corruption and bribery, among many other crimes.
The police broke down the outer doors of the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in the Ecuadorian capital and entered the main courtyard.
The Ecuadorian presidency wrote in a statement on Friday evening: “Ecuador is a sovereign state and we will not allow any criminal to remain free.”
Experts who monitored the arrest indicated that this act was a flagrant violation of the Vienna Conventions on Consular Relations, which is likely to cause a strong rift between the governments of Mexico and Ecuador.
“This is not possible, this is not possible, this is crazy,” Roberto Canseco, head of the Mexican consular section in Quito, said outside the embassy.
In response to a question about the situation of former Vice President Glass and whether security forces had arrested him, he said: “I understand that yes, I am very concerned that they might kill him; there is no basis for doing so, and this is a complete deviation from norms.”
