The Good Guide

It’s a birthday that will be celebrated discreetly. Like a great lady watching over New York, the Fifth, “Fifth Avenue” in vo, celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. A life of ups and downs as the most famous artery of the Big Apple was praised to the skies before no longer being of interest to the ultra-rich.

Walking there is a must for any first stay in New York : the legendary Fifth Avenue, which extends from east of Central Park to Canal Street, is a landmark American which claims the same notoriety as any of its mythical monuments or buildings.

200 years of Fifth Avenue

The most legendary hotels and boutiques have been established there, from the city’s first Apple Store to the famous Plaza Hotel. Hollywood contributed to her fame, featuring her in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Taxi Driver or Mom, I missed the plane againFifth Avenue had lost its candor and grandeur, shunned by new New Yorkers fond of the revitalized (and less expensive) neighborhoods where fashionable boutique-hotels and coffee-shops were springing up like mushrooms, and by tourists troubled by street vendors and its permanent chaos.

Covid has had a hard impact on New York. It nevertheless allowed its most illustrious residents to ignore a period of imposed shutdown to give a facelift to their addresses. This is how Fifth Avenue began its transformation.

More than any other street in New York, Fifth Avenue has given itself a facelift which now hides its age and restores its letters of nobility. The artery, made calmer by the widespread adoption of electric cars, has regained its status as a mecca for luxury shopping, an activity that will be good to punctuate with a few delicious stops…

The Pierre hotel

Jackie Kennedy and Andy Warhol were regulars — and their portraits now hang on its walls. The Pierre, founded by Mr Charles Pierre Casalasco in 1930 and bought a few years later by Jean-Paul Getty, is a legendary hotel in the pure New York tradition. Although it claims hexagonal ancestry, it is an ornate lobby lined with marble which opens after the turnstile door operated by the bellboy.

41 floors, 740 rooms, suites and private residences (78 residents still live there all year round), The Pierre is built around its large ground floor which houses its monumental reception rooms, its restaurant, Perrine, French inspiration and two shops (one of chocolates, frenchiness obliged ; the other stamped Santa Maria Novella).

Because the heritage of the place supports it more than it stifles it, The Pierre, a destination in itself, shines through its employees, and in particular two of them, Maurice Dancer, head concierge for 30 years , and Khady Gueye, elevator operator for 33 years. Two colorful characters who give this hotel its true personality…

Tiffany & Co

One of the most famous flagships on Fifth Avenue reopened last year after massive renovations. Beautified by the American architect Peter Marino (at the helm of Cheval Blanc Paris in particular), the flagship of the diamond brand has regained its splendor on no less than eight floors.

If most of them are logically dedicated to sales, the store has of course not overlooked a restaurant – Blue Boxa pretty café where you can enjoy a very expensive “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” as Holly Golightly dreamed of in Truman Capote’s novel — a meeting place for tourists fond of an Instagram photo but also for New Yorkers who come to enjoy a menu ultimately affordable considering the rates in force in the city and completely satisfactory.

The Tiffany-The Landmark store – as it is officially called – also features a gallery which has just opened its doors. Architect Peter Marino found a refuge for his contemporary art pieces in this light-filled duplex space. Also a great collector of vintage Tiffany & Co tableware, numerous cutlery and plates found around the world introduce the visitor to the world of the whimsical designer.

Tag Heuer

Recently moved to number 645, the Tag Heuer boutique located on Fifth Avenue has transformed into a larger, more welcoming space which gives pride of place to art and noble materials. Thus, a light wooden screen gives privacy to waiting buyers while the rest of the store is structured around the brand’s different collections under the window.

In the basement, an ultra-designed bunker welcomes VIP customers or those wishing to surprise their loved ones for a special shopping moment.

Culture, please!

The MET Fifth Avenue

The Metropolitan Museum of Art — now “MET” — is an architectural and artistic marvel that embodies the very essence of New York art and culture. Founded in 1870, this temple of art has gradually expanded over the decades to become one of the largest museums in the world. Its vast galleries house a collection of incomparable richness, ranging from ancient to contemporary art.

Among his most emblematic works, we find “Les Nymphéas” by Claude Monet, “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer and “Le Printemps” by Pierre-Auguste Cot. Visitors can also admire illustrious sculptures such as “The Dying Slave” by Michelangelo and “The Bronze Age” by Auguste Rodin. Just that…

Le Guggenheim

Just a little further up, another must-see of the New York art scene. Designed by starchitect Frank Lloyd Wright, the building completed in 1959 is distinguished by its characteristic spiral shape. It has since undergone several extensions and renovations, most recently in 2008, with the addition of a new wing designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

Its unique interior architecture of the museum creates a fluid and dynamic journey which displays, among others, grandiose works such as “The Starry Night” by Van Gogh, “Woman in the Mirror” by Pablo Picasso and “No. 31” by Jackson Pollock . In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the Guggenheim also offers a varied program of temporary exhibitions, lectures and performances, offering visitors an enriching artistic experience with each visit.

The Empire State Building

Certainly in competition with new observatories planted all over New York, the Empire State Building remains a must-see. Its timetable admission system revised during the pandemic guarantees rapid access to the attraction, introduced by a museum reviewed and corrected in the mid-2010s, didactic and educational.

And what about his view? Unbeatable, impregnable, immutable. To do in clear weather – the observatory also offers the possibility of rescheduling your tickets if the weather is not favorable.

Accès public via 20 W 34th St., New York, NY 10001. Reservations.

The Best Bars and Restaurants on Fifth Avenue

The Polo Bar

It’s hard to get more chic. If many addresses claim the title, competing with grandiose decors, menus with convoluted titles and an infinite waiting list to dare to hope to find a reservation, the Polo Bar, Ralph Lauren’s legendary bar-restaurant is a nest out of time lined with awnings and decorated in Ivy League fashion.

People come there for dinner from 5:30 p.m. — New York time — as a couple, with friends or to seal a juicy contract. The menu is immutable, composed of classics of American gastronomy, if it exists, from the famous “pigs in a blanket” (our puff pastry sausage rolls) to the burger (of course), including some lighter offerings – which do not are therefore the least expensive choice. An obligatory passage.

The Jazz Club at The Aman

Reinventing an iconic New York concept, Aman offers a unique experience with its Jazz Club, bringing an old-world atmosphere to the lively Midtown Manhattan district. Every evening, live performances ignite the stage, offering a variety of musical genres, from jazz to other styles inspired by this great musical tradition. New York DJs add to the intoxicating atmosphere, recalling the festive energy and nostalgia of years gone by.

In homage to the cultural diversity of the city, the Jazz Club offers an inventive cocktail menu, refined wines and quality spirits, accompanied by a light menu highlighting flavors from around the world, a true reflection of the universe Aman. All this is complemented by top-notch entertainment and an intimate atmosphere, for an unforgettable experience.

Immerse yourself in a sensory journey through the ages, letting the rhythm guide you to where you want to be, in a setting that combines the sophistication and authenticity of the New York spirit.

Caspian Caviar au Mark Hotel

Passing north of Fifth Avenue, perhaps after a detour to the MET, Caviar Kaspia at the Mark Hotel is a very distinguished address for snacking on a club sandwich topped with caviar.

Caviar Kaspia made its debut in New York in one of the emblematic hotels of the Upper East Side, The Mark, in early 2023. Setting up a boutique but also a restaurant there, the French brand celebrates “the art of caviar” by offering a complete menu including the house’s iconic two-cooked potato, garnished with caviar, of course! But also blinis with smoked salmon, bottarga, vegetarian caviar made from liquefied truffle, eggs with caviar, pasta with caviar… All to be combined with a glass of champagne or a glass of vodka.
