A police officer was killed on Thursday evening in a traffic accident during a pursuit in Couillet, a sub-municipality of Charleroi. This was confirmed on Friday morning by the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office.
A police car was involved in an accident in the Rue de Gilly in Couillet on the night of Thursday to Friday around 2 am. Two police officers chased a suspicious vehicle. “The pursuit started at the roundabout on Rue de Phillipeville (N5) in Loverval. After a bend in the Rue de Gilly, the driver of the combination lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a facade,” the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office reports.
The passenger, a police officer born in 1989, was killed instantly. He had a family and had been a police officer for twelve years. The driver of the combination is in hospital with several fractures. He could be interrogated. No suspects have yet been identified.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the two colleagues had not called for reinforcements and it was a traffic accident. “There appears to have been no direct contact between the getaway car and the police car.”
