WhatsApp gives you more power over how links are shared. Many people find it useful that a link is previewed: this way you already know what to expect. But there are also people who prefer not to have those previews turned on, because they want more privacy. The latter category used to have no choice, but that is now going to change.
Link previews on WhatsApp
Link previews on WhatsApp ensure that when someone puts a URL in the chat, an image and the beginning of the page in text can already be seen. This way you know what to expect when you click on the link. Very useful, but at the same time not everyone wants it. For example, some people find it annoying that large blocks arise in the chat, because they take up a lot of space on your screen.

Other people don’t like it because they prefer a little more privacy: someone watching will immediately see what you share, while this cannot always be determined from just a URL. WhatsApp understands that you want to have a choice and now seems to want to offer it. So you get the choice whether you want it or not and that is personal. So if you disable it, others will no longer see previews of your links: you will simply no longer see it yourself. It does not matter whether it is a link that you share yourself or is shared by someone else.
Still in beta now
It’s only available in beta for now, but given WhatsApp’s focus on encrypted messages, for example, we expect this to come to the stable version of the app soon.
And, which team are you from? Do you want the preview or would you rather not? Share it now in the comments of this article.
