Jens Stoltenberg’s mandate as Secretary General of NATO expires on October 1 and a new Secretary General is expected to take his place. The decision on a new secretary general is made by consensus.
Sweden belongs to the group of allies who want to see Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, as the next Secretary General.
– Mark Rutte is a wise leader with solid experience. In a time characterized by increased uncertainty and a deteriorating security policy situation, a strong NATO is needed, which through deterrence and defense contributes to the security of all allies, and to promoting peace and freedom, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
– Mark Rutte is known as a reliable leader with wide trust from north to south. NATO’s unity is a strength for the alliance, says Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch.
– Europe is in a security policy turning point. A united NATO with strong leadership is central to meeting the challenges and threats of our time, says Labor Market and Integration Minister Johan Pehrson.
