Brasilia. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva paid tribute this Wednesday to the 40,000 children who were orphaned by the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, where 711,249 people died.
Such a tribute emerged at the twelfth National Conference on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, held in Brasilia.
“Forty thousand children were orphaned by father and mother. They were orphaned not because the disease had no cure, but because we had someone very irresponsible who thought he governed this country,” said Lula in clear reference to former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022). ).
He pointed out that they dedicated this meeting to some people who could not be among us.
On the official agenda, the founder of the Workers’ Party asked for a photograph in tribute to the children and requested that those present raise their hands.
In addition, he once again criticized the situation in the Gaza Strip as a result of the war between Israel and the military wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas.
“This raising of our hands is a sign of our solidarity with almost 700,000 people who go to sleep without having a glass of milk and bread to eat,” he said.
Also, he continued, “for the 40,000 who lost their parents due to Covid-19 and 12,300 children who died in the Gaza Strip in a war against humanity. We cannot lose the right to be outraged,” he noted.
He warned that “when everything falls back to normal and people are not outraged by anything, it means that something is wrong with our behavior.”
He asked the children not to be afraid to demand, to express their opinions and tell the truth.
“We are politicians and we have to learn that many times people scold us and it is better than having a lot of sycophants around us,” he stressed.
