(CNN) It was learned on the 4th that the US Biden administration is close to approving large-scale military aid to Israel, including the sale of up to 50 F-15 fighter jets.
According to three people familiar with the matter, the total amount of aid is expected to reach more than $18 billion (approximately 2.736 trillion yen). If realized, it would be the largest military aid to Israel since fighting erupted in the Gaza Strip on October 7 last year.
The administration also intends to tell Congress soon about a new large-scale sale of precision-guided weapons to Israel, the people said.
However, these plans could lead to confusing deliberations in the U.S. Congress. In recent months, members of the ruling Democratic Party in particular have begun to scrutinize and regulate arms aid to Israel.
The agreement also includes conditions such as allowing more humanitarian aid to be brought into Gaza and Israel agreeing to take further measures to protect civilians.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas, the Islamic group that effectively controls the area, launched a large-scale surprise attack on Israel. Since then, the United States has provided more than 100 military aid programs to Israel. Most of this aid was in the form of a notification to Congress.
The new delivery of cutting-edge weapons to Israel, including F-15 fighter jets, reflects Washington’s intention to continue to support Israel militarily. At the same time, the Biden administration is being forced to respond to public opinion by criticizing Israel’s military operations in light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where more than 30,000 residents have lost their lives.
