The Klaipėda Ballet School, established in June, will seek to extend the traditions of ballet education in the port city. The school, which will start its activities in July, will be distinguished by classes not only for girls, but also for adults, and by paying attention to the qualifications of pedagogues.
In Klaipėda, there were already several studios teaching modern dance and ballet, but the only specialized ballet school moved to another city this year. It was this that motivated the initiative group to extend the traditions created for 5 years and establish the “Klaipėda Ballet School”.
The new school starts its activities in modern premises, already used for ballet, on Liepų st. 54, and preserving the core of pedagogues. Classes for children and adults will be conducted at the school by the long-time Klaipėda Musical Theater ballet dancers Aleksandra Karečkienė and Kristina Gudelytė, pedagogues Indrė Petrulytė and Airisė Gudonytė, as well as teacher Aneta Augutytė, who will work with the youngest ballerinas. Theater teacher Živilė Subačiūtė also joins the team.
According to the founder of the school, entrepreneur and social activist Alina Velykienė, she was motivated to continue the traditions of ballet education by her life situation – after bringing her daughter to her first lesson at the old school, it turned out that she was moving out.
“I just couldn’t let the five-year-old work, the community of students and teachers collapse. I believe that as a person with management experience, I will be able to create a platform for both educators and students. Ballet is the foundational discipline of all dance styles, providing self-confidence and freedom to create. It is very important to maintain such an opportunity for girls in our region”, says A. Velykienė.
Already in July, the new school will start individual lessons for girls. A summer camp is scheduled for August, and the regular educational process will begin in the fall. So far, ballet classes for 5-6, 7-9, 10-17 year old groups, individual lessons, modern dance and adult ballet groups are planned. The school is also considering offering classes for 3-4 year olds in the future. ballerinas and artistic gymnastics lessons.
“Klaipėda Ballet School” is being built in the former premises of the previous school with two specialized halls, safe dressing and waiting areas. The new school has already purchased all the equipment necessary for professional ballet lessons. The school is already registered as a non-formal education educator, it is planned to cooperate with Klaipėda city municipality on the non-formal education basket. The school will also seek to cooperate with the Klaipėda Musical Theater, other operating Lithuanian ballet and dance schools, and will seek to gather partners in the business community.
“We aim to create a school where every child who touches ballet feels happy and confident. Together, we are building a wider community that loves culture and is a part of it. We will pay special attention to pedagogues – we want to become the best platform for them to convey their knowledge to students, create performances and projects in Lithuanian and international competitions. We plan to invite Lithuanian and foreign ballet stars to share their experience not only with children, but also with teachers,” says A. Velykienė.
