In a recent interview with Metal HammerMaynard James Keenan, the band’s lead singer, shed light on Tool’s creative process and their quest for efficiency, emphasizing the need to accelerate their upcoming projects, saying: “We can’t drag this out for another 14 years”.
The urgency within the band was highlighted by bassist Justin Chancellor, who recognized the impact of their advanced age on their productivity. Chancellor, recalling that drummer Danny Carey is 62, insisted on the need for a more rational approach, suggesting that long hiatuses were no longer an option.
In response to Chancellor’s sentiments, Keenan agreed, acknowledging the complexities within the group but expressing confidence in their collective ability to navigate through creative conflicts and move forward. Keenan remarked: “As soon as we get past the arguments, we can get things done!”. Tool guitarist Adam Jones expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the band’s commitment to its artistic vision rather than outside expectations.
Jones said: “We can’t make everyone happy… We have a very selfish approach to art. These are our rules.” He warned against compromising their creative integrity in the pursuit of external validation, emphasizing the importance of remaining true to their artistic instincts.
While fans eagerly await new Tool material, the band has hinted that it is making progress on other fronts, including the imminent completion of vinyl reissues of its catalog. Additionally, Tool fans can catch the band’s European tour, with dates stretching from Hannover to Oslo.
