Rishabh Pant Emerges as Front-Runner for T20 World Cup Squad Spot in IPL 2024

Visakhapatnam: When the IPL 2024 season started, the Indian selectors were mainly looking at the wicket-keeper batsmen. Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurrell, Jitesh Sharma, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are the keepers competing to make the World Cup squad. Among them, Sanju Samson started with a bang in the first match of the season, but now with two half-centuries, Rishabh Pant has gained the upper hand in the battle to make the World Cup squad.

Rajasthan Royals’ Malayali captain Sanju Samson’s performance in this IPL season is very crucial to reach the Twenty20 World Cup team. Sanju Samson got off to a good start with an unbeaten 82* off 52 balls against Lucknow Supergiants in the first match of the season. In the next matches, he scored only 15 runs in 14 balls against Delhi Capitals and 12 runs in 10 balls against Mumbai Indians. Sanju has scored 109 runs in the three matches he has played so far.

Meanwhile Rishabh Pant has 152 runs in four innings including two fifties. In the last match, Delhi Capitals lost miserably against Kolkata Knight Riders by 106 runs but Rishabh scored 55 runs off 25 balls with four fours and five sixes. Although he is coming back after a long break due to an injury in a car accident, Rishabh is expected to be included in the T20 World Cup squad once he regains his batting form. The fact that he was a regular in Team India before his car accident is a favorable factor for Rishabh in the team selection.

The hope for Rishabh is that the other wicketkeepers who are being considered for the World Cup squad like Dhruv Jurrell, Jitesh Sharma, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are yet to reach big scores. Jurel 40, Jitesh Sharma 42, Ishan Kishan 50 and KL Rahul 93 have scored runs in the IPL 2024 season so far in three matches. Meanwhile, if he returns to batting form, Sanju Samson will again get a chance as a wicket-keeper batsman in the World Cup squad.
