Denmark Fires Chief of Defense Staff for Failure to Report Malfunctioning Weapons System During Houthi Attack on Frigate in Red Sea – Reuters

Denmark fired Chief of Defense Staff Flemming Lenfter on Wednesday after he failed to report faulty weapons systems during last month’s attack on a Danish frigate deployed to the Red Sea.

This, as European Pravda writes, reports Reuters.

On Tuesday, local defense publication Olfi cited a confidential captain’s report that the frigate’s radar and missile systems malfunctioned during a drone attack by Houthi militants on March 9, putting its 175-member crew at risk.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said at a press briefing that he had not been briefed in detail about the incident.

“I was not aware of the report provided by the captain,” Poulsen said, declining to elaborate.

“I no longer trust the head of the Defense Staff, Flemming Lentfer,” he added.

The frigate Iver Huitfeldt, which was deployed to the Red Sea as part of the US-led Operation Guardian of Prosperity to protect commercial shipping, ultimately shot down four drones during the March 9 attack without causing any harm to the ship or crew.

According to the minister, Lentfer, who was appointed to the position in October 2020, will be replaced on an interim basis by Michael Wiggers Hildgaard.

Let us remind you that EU naval mission for the protection of civil navigation in the Red Sea under the name Aspides, effective from 19 February 2024; The United States and a group of allies have launched their mission since the end of 2023.

Last week, the EU naval mission in the Red Sea said that destroyed three ballistic missiles and a maritime drone by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militants to protect merchant ships.
