What if we could revolutionize the way we approach sleep and turn it from a nightly necessity into a targeted wellness strategy? Sleep is considered our most important means of recovery, and for a reason: almost all recovery takes place during sleep. Now TEMPUR has brought to the bed market a completely new way to serve in the bed business: three-year well-being monitoring, which aims at even more individual and comprehensive expert guidance to achieve better sleep and alertness.
Every day takes a toll on the body and mind, whether it’s a peaceful day off or a hard day at work. Without adequate recovery, you have a weaker starting point to start the next day. When repeated, poor recovery reduces physical and mental resources, causes an alarm state in the body and exposes to many health risks, such as cardiovascular diseases, susceptibility to infections and metabolic disorders.
– A worrying number of Finns sleep badly. Factors that influence this are the performance of everyday life, concern and responsibility factors. Drifting into overload and prolonged fatigue is therefore not an exception, but a very common challenge, says the physiotherapist and trained sleep ergonomics expert (KNA) Janika Kiuru.
Let’s move together to a more restorative tomorrow
Based on accurate and reliable Firstbeat measurement data, night sleep is clearly the most effective way to recover, followed by daytime sleep. According to research results, sleeping also reduces perceived pain and supports concentration and maintains a good mood. The ability to concentrate and a happy mind are often put to the test in work environments overflowing with stimuli, where stressful work tasks have become commonplace and the lower back and shoulders get stuck due to long periods of standing still.
The expert in sleep and sleep ergonomics, TEMPUR, has started a collaboration with Firstbeat, which offers accurate analytics through measurements: The goal is to support the recovery and functional ability of more and more people. For more than 20 years, Firstbeat has been researching heart rate variability. When the heart rate variability increases, it is a sign that the recovery is starting.
– We are very excited about this service, because it makes it possible to take recovery to a completely new level for everyone. We want to change the bed market in the direction where the importance of sleep is understood, and people would know how to organize their everyday life so that the conditions for quality recovery are in order. A bed should support the sleeper’s ergonomics and be a place to recharge the body and mind. However, this is not always the case, and that is the problem we want to fix for everyone individually, says Kiuru.
Do you want to sleep and recover better? Is your sleep such an important part of your well-being that you should have an expert’s opinion on purchases that affect it? Daytime choices affect your sleep the next night
Comprehensive improvement of one’s well-being and especially monitoring one’s body functions with measuring devices is popular nowadays. A clear change in one’s health or a measurable benefit encourages a more permanent lifestyle change, whether it’s improving sleep, increasing exercise or lowering one’s stress levels. Measurement data helps to take into account those things that really need improvement.
– Few of us can really interpret our body’s signals about proper recovery without a measuring device. That’s why recovery experts also measure themselves regularly, says Kiuru.
Restorative sleep is built on the choices of the day and the optimal sleeping environment. When everyday life consists of regular eating rhythms, sufficient exercise, breaks and an appropriate amount of relaxation, you offer sleep better opportunities to give restorative power.
How should you move so that it supports sleep?
In addition, FirstBeat measures whether you move enough to get the health benefits of exercise. Exercise extends the duration of sleep and improves its quality in many ways. Exercise has a positive effect on sleep by shortening the delay in falling asleep, increasing the duration of the deep sleep phase and reducing the amount of REM sleep. REM sleep, which is sometimes also referred to as blinking, is the stage of sleep in which the majority of dreams are seen.
– Regular exercise has been linked in studies to undisturbed sleep and inactivity to sleep disorders. It is one important tool in the sleep maintenance toolbox, Kiuru explains.
The timing of exercise can have an effect, often the timing of strenuous exercise right before going to bed is not recommended, it raises the heart rate and can raise the level of alertness so that sleep does not come immediately or it is not of the same quality. In the Firstbeat measurement results, strenuous late-night exercise may show up as low-quality night sleep the entire following night, especially if the day before has already been stressful. Lighter exercise, such as a leisurely walk and stretching or leisurely mobility training, has a sleep-improving effect even late at night. So you should never skip exercise, even if it’s late, but it’s better to exercise in moderation near bedtime.
Exercise has been shown to improve sleep even in shift workers living with an irregular sleep-wake rhythm, and particularly clearly, endurance exercise with a reasonable load has been shown to help with insomnia.

Sleep ergonomics improves sleep and promotes functional capacity
In addition to the fact that exercise can support sleep, sleep ergonomics and the sleeping environment also have a significant effect on the quality of sleep. With a suitable mattress, pillow and blanket, you sleep more restfully and the number of nighttime awakenings can decrease. According to research results, after interrupted sleep, blood cortisol concentrations and blood pressure are elevated, and there may be abnormalities in fat metabolism. In the long term, low-quality or too little sleep increases the risk of overweight and obesity. Exercise helps with weight management in different ways, both due to its energy-consuming effect and unequivocally improving the quality of night sleep.
