The Government of El Salvador prioritized the protection of the population and visitors during Holy Week. Road safety, water rescue, pre-hospital care, prevention and response to emergencies were part of the development of the Summer 2024 Plan, executed since March 23.
“We have exceeded all expectations, we have received 132 thousand international visitors, an increase of 29% compared to last year. In national tourism we receive 1.7 million visitors, this means 46% more than in 2023,” said the head of theMinistry of Tourism Morena Valdez and mentioned that the Port of La Libertad, BINAES, the Balboa Natural Park, the open-air cinema and Ilopango Lake were the most visited public sites.
The director of Civil Protection Luis Alonso Amaya, reported on the good results of the plan and highlighted the work of the Lifeguard Unit, deployed in 110 strategic points, on 28 beaches. “We can say with propriety that we have had zero deaths due to asphyxiation due to immersion where the plan was and in a coordinated and agile manner it has been possible to rescue 156 people, of these there have been 72 simple rescues and 84 deep rescues,” said Amaya.
Meanwhile, Nelson Reyes, head of the VMT, mentioned that there was a massive deployment in coordination with other institutions that made the devices possible to guarantee road safety. “There were more than 1,250 devices, 250 for traffic facilitation, it is important because during the holiday season there is no influx of vehicles like the usual ones, but there are in tourist centers”detailed the official.
In addition, Reyes highlighted that there was an increase of more than 100% in anti-doping controls, since, in 2023, 2,890 tests were carried out and this year during the holiday period there were more than 7 thousand tests. In the case of those arrested for dangerous driving, last year 63 and in 2024 more than 150 captured for driving while intoxicated. “Until today, at noon there were 153”specified the official.
There is also a decrease of four injuries in traffic accidents compared to the same period last year, in deaths there was an increase of 10, last year there were 22 and this year, 32; 71% correspond to people who were distracted or traveling at excessive speed.
