Bulgakov is a symbol of Russian imperial policy: the conclusion of the UINP — Ukraine

Mykhailo Bulgakov, despite his Ukrainian roots, was an imperialist and a Ukrainophobe by outlook.

Objects dedicated to the Russian writer Mykhailo Bulgakov in Ukraine, are symbols of Russian imperial policy, and their further presence in the public space is of a propagandistic nature.

Experts write about it Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (UINP).

They noted that despite the fact that the author of the Russian-language novels “The Master and Margarita”, “Heart of a Dog”, “The White Guard” and others was born and lived in Kyiv for a long time, his family came from the Oryol province, and Bulgakov himself was an emperor and a Ukrainophobe by outlook.

“Despite the years of living in Kyiv, the writer despised Ukrainians and their culture, hated the Ukrainian desire for independence, spoke negatively about the formation of the Ukrainian state and its leaders. Among all the Russian writers of that time, he is the closest to the current ideologues of Putinism and the Kremlin’s justification of genocide in Ukraine. He was world-viewing in the positions of Russian imperialism, the White Guards, and approved of the expansion of Russian communism,” says the professional conclusion of the UINP experts.

Experts also noted that the anti-humane discourse of Bulgakov’s story “I Killed” (1926) fully resonates with the narratives of current Kremlin propagandists – Dugin, Solovyov, Skabeeva and is the prototext of today’s calls to destroy Ukrainians.

“The story contains the ideology of fascism: a wounded Ukrainian military doctor is killed only because of his nationality by the doctor character, Bulgakov’s alter ego. The author, a doctor by profession, artistically savors the moment of the murder and, guided by the idea of ethnocide, proves an absurd thesis: a doctor’s oath, the Hippocratic code can to transgress,” says the analysis of the Russian writer’s works.

Mykhailo Bulgakov and his entourage did not recognize the existence of the Ukrainian language.

The Russian writer had a prejudiced and distinctly negative attitude towards everything Ukrainian – Ukrainians, their language, culture, the right to their own state, etc., and his work is directly related to the glorification of Russian imperial policy and undisguised Ukrainophobia.

“In view of the above, the objects (geographic objects, names of legal entities, monuments and memorial signs) dedicated to the Russian writer M.A. Bulgakov (1891–1940), in accordance with the first part of Article 2 of the Law contain symbols of Russian imperial policy, and the further use of the name of M.A. Bulgakov in the names of geographical objects and legal entities, the presence of monuments and memorial signs erected in his honor in public space is propaganda of Russian imperial policy,” they summarized in the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.

We will remind the Russians are preparing a so-called “law” banning Ukrainian literature in the temporarily occupied territories.
