Rising Trend of Assaults on Women in New York Linked to TikTok – NBC News

“It’s absolutely terrifying,” can we read in the comment section of certain TikTok videos. We discover testimonies of women hit by men in the street in New York, while they were going to work, school or walking their dog.

“I was walking when someone attacked me from behind […]I could not do anything”, says a victim has NBC News. These attacks took place between March 17 and 26, according to ABC7. Since then, testimonies have multiplied on social networks, to the point of making the city’s mayor react.

“C’est abject. […] It is unacceptable for a woman walking down the street to be hit like this,” lamented the Democratic mayor, Eric Adams, on Tuesday April 2, during an appearance on the American television show Good Morning America. Before continuing: “It would be better for them if, when I’m out on the street, I don’t witness this kind of behavior.”

If Eric Adams is ready to confront the attackers, a priori two suspects were identified and arrested on March 27 and 28, according to the media Today. “The New York City Police Department became aware of a video widely shared on social media showing a woman being assaulted [en pleine rue] for no apparent reason. The perpetrator was arrested and indicted,” New York police said in a statement.

According to American media reports NBC News et The Washington Post, the latter confirmed “having opened several investigations into facts very similar to the testimonies shared on social networks”, without indicating the number of reports or whether she believed the incidents were related.

“TikTok spreads malicious acts”

In this case, the mayor of New York blames the“deleterious effect of TikTok”, according to the American media The Hill. He detailed his vision of the social network during his appearance on television: “This app tells people how to steal a car, how to climb on the roof of subways, and now it’s spreading malicious and completely disrespectful acts.”

Although it has not been proven that these attacks were encouraged by social networks, the testimonies have indeed sparked a wave of concern about the safety of women in New York, confirms The Washington Post.

Today, overall crime is down in the city but misdemeanor and felony assaults are up 10% and 3% respectively compared to the same period last year, according to data communicated by the city of New York.
