Belgium to Decriminalize Sex Work: Thousands to Receive Employment Contracts

Belgium will become the second country in the world to decriminalize sex work. Thousands of people will ultimately be considered workers, and will benefit from an employment contract. Isabelle Jaramillo, coordinator for the non-profit organization Espace P, was the guest at 12:30 p.m.

The House Social Affairs Committee approved this Tuesday the bill which allows sex workers to be given an employment contract. But the PTB requests a second reading, which postpones approval of the bill. The objective is to validate this before May 8. This will allow this activity to be registered in the same way as other activities. “It remains a specific professional activity, with strict conditions, but sex workers will be able to claim the same rights as others”, explains Isabelle Jaramillo. Until now, there was vagueness around these professions. “It was DIY. The system allowed people to exercise but without benefiting from all the rights to which they were entitled.adds the coordinator.

This progress will allow workers to have better protection and to work in safer conditions. “Not everything can be resolved at once. Part of the public will not be able to enter this system, because they are not in residence order”explains Isabelle Jaramillo.

Espace P is celebrating its 35th anniversary. ” The observation is in two shades, there is significant progress in terms of support for sex workers and a little gloomy because the work is still enormous in terms of inclusion, and the fight against violence against sex workers”she concludes.
