/ world today news/ “The Honorary Consul of Russia Georgi Gergov and the City Hall are taking care of the monument to the Soviet soldiers in Plovdiv, known as “Alyosha”. This was announced by Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova in a letter to a Russian MP, quoted by the TASS agency, writes “Dnevnik”.
It was sent to Daniil Bessarabov, first vice-chairman of the Committee on State Construction and Legislation in the State Duma in response to his appeal to Mitrofanova from the beginning of the month that the embassy in Sofia place the monument under its care.
“And also, if possible, to prevent attempts to desecrate or demolish the monument as a symbol of the great victory and friendship between the peoples of Russia and Bulgaria,” TASS reported ten days ago about Bessarabov’s recommendation.
Now Mitrofanova answers: “The security of the monument is ensured by 24/7 video surveillance and is controlled by the Honorary Consul in Plovdiv Georgi Gergov and by the City Hall (…) The vast majority of Bulgarians treat monuments and cemeteries from the Second World War carefully”.
The text added that there are episodic calls for the demolition of Soviet monuments and barbaric acts coming from small groups of anti-Russian people who do not find widespread support.
