First Ship Passes Under Baltimore Bridge Since Collapse – Temporary Navigation Corridor Opens

A ship passed under the Baltimore Bridge for the very first time since its collapse. Authorities announced that a first temporary navigation corridor would allow small vessels “essential” to clear the debris to pass. A first step in the gradual recovery maritime traffic.

This is the very first image of a boat passing under the Baltimore Bridge. For the first time since the fall of the Francis Scott Key Bridge a week ago, a ship was able to make its way through the rubble of this structure this Monday, April 1. A temporary navigation corridor which should allow the gradual resumption of maritime traffic.

A temporary corridor

For the moment, this corridor should only allow the passage of small vessels considered “essential”. The passage, which is 3.4 meters deep and 80 meters wide, is in fact “insufficient for container ships or cargo ships to use it”, as Carmen Caver, spokesperson for the Coast Guard, clarified on Monday. It is therefore reserved for the moment only for buildings “involved in operations” clearing as well as rescue.

So when will traffic be able to resume in this port in the northeast of the United States, one of the main ones in the country? For the moment, the timetable has not been set. “Work is underway to gradually open the passage to more ships, but we do not have a timetable for this”, admitted the coast guard spokesperson. A second navigation corridor should, however, be open to navigation “in the coming days”according to details from Maryland Governor Wes Moore during a press conference.
