TEL AVIV – Israeli security forces on Monday (1/4/2024) arrested the younger sister of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on charges of incitement to terrorism.
This news was according to media reports citing police. Officials reportedly claimed to have found documents, phones and other items linking Zebah Abdel Salem Haniyeh, 57, an Israeli citizen, to “serious violations against Israel.”
Police initially did not identify the suspect, saying only that he was a resident of the southern city of Tel Sheva, where the raid took place early Monday.
However, according to The Times of Israel, a defense source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the woman was one of Haniyeh’s sisters.
The operation, dubbed ‘Early Dawn’, was reportedly a multi-departmental effort, with police, border officials, the IDF and Israel Police air units all taking part in the attack.
Israeli Southern District Commander Inspector Amir Cohen was quoted as commenting on the arrest operation that no effort would be distinguished in the fight against terrorism and every available asset would be used to ensure peace and security for Israeli citizens.
On Monday, some Israeli media reported that Zebah Abdel Salem Haniyeh will be detained until April 4.
Reports of the arrests emerged as Israel continues to wage war against Hamas in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Palestinian militant groups, after they carried out a deadly attack on Israel last October, killing around 1,200 people and taking many others hostage.
The Israeli genocide has wrought enormous damage in Gaza, leaving 32,000 people dead, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
On Sunday, Netanyahu reiterated his determination to achieve “victory,” and revealed he had approved an “operational plan” to carry out a new offensive on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
