NASA’s Curiosity Rover Explores Gediz Vallis on Mars to Uncover Mysteries of Ancient Water Disappearance

JAKARTA – Mars is one of the planets that is believed to have lakes until rivers dry up. Even though liquid water is difficult to find, the Curiosity robot is still continuing to explore the planet.

NASA, the developer of Curiosity, recently stated that their rover had arrived in an area called Gediz Vallis. This area was visited not to look for water, but to look for evidence that water once flowed and filled Mars.

Scientists believe that Mars was a very wet planet about billions of years ago. However, due to reasons that are still a mystery, liquid water disappeared forever from the surface of the Red Planet.

By exploring Gediz Vallis, NASA wants Curiosity to find signs of when liquid water started to disappear and what caused it. NASA also deliberately chose Gediz Vallis because the area is believed to have been a river in the past.

Gediz Vallis is a channel filled with rocks and large debris. Scientists want to know where it all comes from. Rivers may be the cause because their energy is strong enough to unite rocks with the bed.

Before exploring the Gediz Vallis region, Curiosity spent several months climbing the foot of Mount Sharp. This 5 kilometer area is believed to have layers formed over millions of years amid changes in the Martian climate.

Curiosity’s exploration of the foot of Mount Sharp showed that the water appears to come and go gradually. By exploring Gediz Vallis, NASA hopes that their rover robot will be able to refine information about the loss of water on Mars.
