Chinese Figure Skating New Generation Shines at National Championship, Bringing Hope for the Future

Xinhua News Agency, Yunnan Tengchong, March 31 (Reporters Li Jia, Gao Meng, Yue Ranran) As the National Championship ended in Tengchong, Yunnan on the 31st, the 2023/24 season figure skating event officially came to an end. Chinese figure skating has performed poorly in international competitions this season, but from domestic competitions, newcomers have emerged in the women’s singles event, and the level of pairs skating has improved. The performance of the new generation has brought some hope to Chinese figure skating, which is at a low point.

Women’s singles has always been a weak point in Chinese figure skating. After Chen Lu, there has been no outstanding player in international competitions. In recent years, as the popularity of figure skating has increased, a number of young skaters with both jumping and gliding abilities have emerged in China. The Beijing team is particularly outstanding. 13-year-old Gao Shiqi, 12-year-old Jin Shuxian, and 14-year-old Wang Yihan have all performed brilliantly this season. In the women’s singles field of the championship, 6 of the 11 players were from the Beijing team. Jin Shuxian finally defeated Gao Shiqi to win the championship.

Jin Shuxian, nicknamed “Xianxian”, is the runner-up of this season’s championship and the champion of the “Fourteenth Winter” open category. Her movements are difficult and she can complete advanced triple triple jumps. Gao Shiqi is the champion of this season’s National Youth Championship and the runner-up of the youth group of the “14 Winters”. He represented the Chinese team in the Winter Youth Olympics and finished seventh. Wang Jialei, coach of the Beijing team, said: “Jin Shuxian has strong personal ability, difficult jumps, very clear ideas during the game, and a relatively stable personality. Gao Shiqi’s advantages are mainly reflected in his high skating speed, infectious performance, and high-quality movement completion.”

In addition, although Wang Yihan missed the championship, he also performed well this season. He was the youth champion of the “14th Winter”, the youth champion of the club league finals, and also won the fourth place in the Polish Grand Prix.

However, although the women’s singles reserve force is relatively abundant, the gap between them and young foreign players is not small. How to improve their competitive level is a problem that must be faced at the moment.

Wang Jialei said: “The technical level of domestic women’s singles has been narrowing the gap with Japan and South Korea in the past two years. Figure skating is a relatively complex sport, and athletes cannot just focus on one of them, such as jumping, spinning, gliding, Footwork, performance, choreography, and physical fitness are all athletes’ daily training items. Therefore, we now modularize training, set up a coaching team to clearly divide work, and formulate targeted training plans from different aspects, thereby effectively improving athletes’ performance. Competitive ability.”

Several young pairs skating pairs have made significant progress this season. Zhang Xuanqi/Feng Wenqiang have been training with Luan Bo, the first coach of Winter Olympic champions Sui Wenjing/Han Cong, for two years. Zhang Xuanqi is now 12 years old, and Feng Wenqiang is 15 years old. Both of them have improved their movement stability and artistic expression this season, and won third place in the championship. Sui Wenjing is the duo’s choreographer. “Teacher Sui has been very helpful to our artistic expression, especially hand movements. My knowledge of dance types has also expanded a lot.” Feng Wenqiang said, “The place where we have grown the most this season is in performance and skating. , the scores in each competition have improved compared to the previous one. Our goal next season is to participate in the (International Skating Union) Youth Grand Prix and strive to win a medal for Chinese figure skating.”

Zhang Jiaxuan/Huang Yihang, who have been paired together for nearly two years, have also developed a tacit understanding. They have a high degree of completion in throwing jumps and twists. They successfully won the championship in the championship. “We give ourselves a score of 90 this season, and next season we will stabilize our skills and improve our performance. What we want to improve most is performance,” Huang Yihang said. Sun Youmei/Li Zeen, who won the runner-up, completed an extremely difficult quadruple twirl in the free skate, but made mistakes in the triple toss and single jump. As the height of 12-year-old Sun Youmei continues to increase, 25-year-old Li Zeen feels that the two have better coordination, but the throwing jump needs to be more stable.

Compared with the abundant talents in the women’s singles, the men’s singles reserve force is slightly thin. Han Wenbao, the third runner-up of the “14 Winters”, presented a complete free skating program at the championship. The triple hook jump was of considerable height, but there were no triple and a half triple jumps and quadruple jumps, so the difficulty was insufficient. He said he hopes to increase the difficulty next season. The 13-year-old Li Jiarui became much calmer after the experience of “Fourteen Winters”. He only made a slight mistake in one triple axle in the free skate and finally won the silver medal. Out of 5 points, he would rate himself 4.9 points this season. “My mentality has improved a lot. I couldn’t sleep before games before, but now I should eat and drink.”

In the ice dance event, Xiao Zixi/He Linghao were eye-catching. The two teamed up to win the third place in the “14th Winter” in less than a year, and won the silver medal in the championship, only losing to the experienced Chen Xizi/ Xing Jianing.

This season, Chinese figure skating is still in the adjustment period after the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the adult group has performed poorly in international competitions. Peng Cheng/Wang Lei, who have been paired together for just one year, are currently the strongest pair skating team in China, but they only finished 16th at the World Championships in March. Men’s singles star Jin Boyang made a mistake at the World Championships and failed to advance to the free skate. Chen Xizi/Xing Jianing also failed to enter the free dance. The women’s singles were the worst, with no one qualifying for the World Championships.

Pairs skating has been the dominant event of the Chinese team for many years, and the men’s singles also won fourth place at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. I hope that these new forces can grow quickly, take up the leading role as soon as possible, and help Chinese figure skating get out of the trough as soon as possible.
