Liberty Media Acquires Dorna and MotoGP for 4.2 Billion Euros: Ownership Changes and Expansion Plans

Now it’s official: Liberty Media, which has had control of Formula 1 since 2016, has announced the acquisition of Dorna and therefore of MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, Superbike and MotoE. The cost of the deal, which will conclude at the end of 2024, is approximately 4.2 billion euros. “Liberty Media – explains a joint press release – will acquire approximately 86% of Dorna. Dorna’s management will have approximately 14% of the shares. The transaction has a corporate value for Dorna/MotoGP of 4.2 billion euros (4, $53 billion) and an equity value of €3.5 billion with the balance of MotoGP’s existing debt expected to remain in place post-closing.” The ownership then changes. This is the shareholding composition of Dorna ownership to date: 40% is in the hands of the Canadian fund Bridgepoint which acquired its stake in 2006 from CVC Capital Partners; 38% is from the Canadian Pension Fund (CPPIB); 22% is split between various Dorna executives, with Carmelo Ezpeleta at 10%.

the role of ezpeleta

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO since 1994, will maintain his position together with his work group. The offices, as specified in the note, will remain in Madrid. As mentioned, the acquisition will be completed by the end of 2024 and, obviously, will be subjected to scrutiny by the antitrust and foreign investment control authorities of the countries that have jurisdiction over the transfer.

expansion

“We are thrilled to expand our portfolio of leading sports and live entertainment assets with the acquisition of MotoGP,” said Greg Maffei, President and CEO of Liberty Media. “This is the perfect next step in the evolution of MotoGP and we are excited about what this milestone will bring to Dorna, the MotoGP paddock and racing fans,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta.
