Music producer David Calzado, leader of the 16-member musical group, Charanga Habanera, caused controversy by expressing his opinion about the gender of the Cuban cast.
During an interview, the singer stated that the cast is music intended almost entirely for the Cuban public, who is the one who can understand it, so its popularization on networks and platforms was only local, without international importance.
In that sense, he implied that it is not something worth investing in, in addition to accusing many singers of plagiarizing foreign songs taking advantage of the isolation of the Island that prevents them from being known in the country.
This caused a debate among the interviewers, who questioned whether those who like the cast “lack culture,” or if they simply do not have the resources to know other musical genres.
The position of course put many followers of the genre on the defensive, but also its exponents, and one of those who was not left out was El Chulo, who calls himself ‘President of the Cast’.
The rapper posted a video on his Instagram, where he highlighted that for many musicians in the genre, reaching modest streaming numbers is a significant achievement.
In addition, he pointed out that the majority of “support” musicians share a story of improvement and struggle, starting from scratch in their musical career.
In that sense, El Chulo stressed that he does not consider Charanga Habanera as competition, since circumstances and recognition come to them in different ways. He concluded by pointing out that “reparto” musicians have known how to earn their place in the Cuban music industry.
The distributor’s publication was supported by other media colleagues, such as Wow Popy and DJ Vega.
“That local music, that million views on YouTube which we celebrate with love because it is our music that got 99% of us off the street and out of bad ways,” wrote Wow Popy.
