Man Arrested After Bomb Threat on Bus in Amstelveen Allowed to Await Trial in Freedom

The man who was taken from a bus and arrested in the center of Amstelveen last Thursday has been allowed to await his trial in freedom. After interrogation, the 67-year-old man from The Hague was released.

This is what the Royal Military Police (KMar) told NH. He is still suspected of making threats, a spokesperson emphasizes, for which he will have to appear in court later.

The man shouted at Schiphol Plaza on Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m. that he was carrying a bomb, the KMar previously told NH. Shortly afterwards he boarded Connexxion bus 300 at the bus station, which would travel via Amstelveen to Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena. The bus didn’t get that far. The driver of the bus, who had been followed from Schiphol by a police helicopter, was ordered to stop the bus on the Meander in Amstelveen.

Eviction

The nearby bus station was evacuated and the area around the bus cordoned off. Ultimately, the man was removed from the bus by members of the Special Interventions Service and arrested. The other passengers were also able to leave the bus safely. They said that the man had been acting nervous for a large part of the ride.

The suspicious package did not contain explosives, it was soon announced. The Royal Military Police does not yet want to reveal what was inside. It is not yet known when the suspect will appear in court.

Second detention

The spokesperson does say that a second arrest on Thursday afternoon in a bus at the bus station in front of Schiphol Plaza is not related to the arrest of the 67-year-old man. A witness informed NH that around 1:30 in the afternoon someone was taken from a bus at Schiphol and taken away in handcuffs, but that is a different suspicion.
