Microsoft and OpenAI Plan Unprecedented $100 Billion Supercomputer Project ‘Stargate’

The technology companies “Microsoft” and “OpenAI” plan to build an unprecedented supercomputer that would use millions of specialized server chips and could cost up to 100 billion US dollars, reports “Business Insider”.

Dubbed “Stargate,” the US-based supercomputer would be the centerpiece of a five-phase plan aimed at a series of supercomputers the companies plan to build over the next six years. “Stargate” (English Stargate) could be open until 2028, project representatives claim.

According to information, the executives of the two companies have already drawn up plans for a data center project that would power “OpenAI” artificial intelligence (AI).

Microsoft, which has already committed more than $13 billion to OpenAI, is likely to provide funding for the planned supercomputer. OpenAI currently uses Microsoft data centers to run its generative AI system, ChatGPT, in exchange for Microsoft getting exclusive rights to resell the technology to its customers.

Business Insider’s sources at Microsoft reported earlier this month that the company’s strategy is increasingly focused on working with OpenAI, prompting some experts to worry that Microsoft is essentially becoming the startup’s IT department.
