After a five-year hiatus, the trotting horse race returns to Dzūkija with a bang. January 13 The 2024 trotting marathon will begin at the Lazdija racetrack, and for the first time in the history of this racetrack, trotters will compete on ice.
“Trot racing on ice is a tradition of the Lithuanian people, which can be preserved and passed on to future generations only if it is continued and encouraged. By taking the initiative and preparing the ice track with our own efforts, we want to show that this tradition is not just a memory of the past, but can live as a part of modern life, connecting people and promoting cooperation”, says Joana Kērytė, director of the Republican Racing Horse League.
The Republican Racehorse League, which organizes the race, started forming the ice over the weekend. Water is transported by tankers from a nearby stream and poured onto the path while constantly checking the ice uniformity. In order to cover reliable and high-quality ice, dozens of tanks of water will be poured on the racetrack until the day of the race.
The event will start at 12:00. presentation of horses. The duos of trotters and handlers will have to cover two laps each, a total distance of 2080 m. Good news for spectators – the starts and finishes of all races will take place in front of the spectators’ tribune, so they will be very visible. Prize winners will be awarded right here after each run. The talisman Trotis will help monitor everything. The event is free.
The race will be accompanied by entertainment. A bonfire will be lit next to the tribune, and the spectators will be able to enjoy not only its warmth, but also hot drinks, donuts and other snacks, and the music of the “Žiburys” ensemble.
The last time the trotting horse race was held at the Lazdijai Dzūkija hippodrome was in 2018.

Republican League of Racehorses founded in 1999 and is the only organization in Lithuania that takes care of trotting horse breeding (runs a racing trotting horse breeding program) and organizes races of this horse breed.
