Actress María Isabella Rojas and her mother, producer Soraya Sussman, talk about The Company We Keep Theater Productions, a theater company that seeks to open doors for Latin artists.
“More actors, more Hispanic talent and leaving that door wide open to continue rising and succeeding in the art here in New York,” says Soraya Sussman, Co-founder, of TCWKTP. “So that we One day we will be at the same level as Broadway and they will not see it as a special case,†he adds.
Maria Isabella studied theater since she was little in New York, and later in San Francisco and England.
However, due to lack of opportunities in theater, he entered the film industry.
“There are not many roles for Afro-Latina women, there are not many works written with Latinas in the important role, so I saw that I had to make my own career, and my own company, because I said: how am I going to “Can I be an older actress? I don’t know why there is no work for me here,” says Rojas.
Together with their mother, they founded the company The company We Keep theater Productions.
“The Latin talent that does not have a voice… So it is a very big job that we want to continue doing,†continues Maria Isabella, actress, who is also Co-Founder of TCWKTP.
She explains that working together has been her greatest strength.
“I believe that my mother Soraya is a woman who always puts her family first and always lives a happy and fulfilling life seeing her children achieve what they want.â€
In addition to giving opportunity to her family and her community, Rojas says that her inspiration also lies in the value of being a woman and working for equality in an industry governed by men.
“Put the story of the women in my family to the public and have it as a moment in history that we can be strong and in control of our lives,†she says.
At the moment they are rehearsing their first play, constellations, which will be presented at the Chain theater from April 18 to 28.
