It is planned to agree on the cessation of control on the land borders of the two countries, which are the internal borders of the European Union (EU), in the negotiations this year.
Therefore, Ireland and Cyprus are the only EU countries that are not members of the Schengen area. The zone includes non-bloc Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Bulgaria and Romania have been EU members since 2007. They hoped to join the Schengen area at the end of 2022, but Austria vetoed the two countries’ applications, pointing to the disproportionately large number of illegal immigrants entering the EU through Bulgaria and Romania.
At the end of December last year, an agreement was reached on the extension of the rules of the Schengen zone to the airports and seaports of Bulgaria and Romania, but Austria still does not agree to the end of controls on the land borders.
