On Saturday morning, Niki Kerameos in her statements referred to the case of Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou. Among other things, he mentioned the way and the will of the government to clarify the case and the real culprits.
At the same time, he pointed out that she does not bear any responsibility since she was not a minister during the specific period of time. All of the above brought the reaction of the opposition parties either through announcements or statements by their executives.
SYRIZA-PS: Who gave the order for the delivery of personal data?
On the question “who gave the order for the handing over of personal data from the ministry to the ND party?”, SYRIZA-PS insists in a statement, and adds: “The time for answers has come.”
In his announcement he states: “The Minister of the Interior of the government, Niki Kerameos, tried today to convince us that the government, her party and herself are not responsible for the leaking of the emigrants’ emails to Mrs. Asimakopoulou. It’s just… it happened that the responsibility for the leak was apparently shared by two members of the New Democracy, the general secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Michalis Stavrianoudakis, and the secretary of Hellenism Abroad of the New Democracy, Nikos Theodoropoulos. Completely by chance, in fact, the list ended up in the hands of an MEP who belongs to the New Democracy faction!”.
Generalizing, he asserts: “We are not surprised by her attitude. It is a standard policy of the Mitsotakis government not to assume the responsibilities that fall to it. It’s not the fault of the surveillance, it’s not the fault of the crime in Tempe, it’s not the fault of the accuracy, it’s not the fault of the breakdown of public health, it’s not the fault of the surveillance…. However much they try to cover up the huge political scandal, they are not going to succeed. SYRIZA PS will persist until its aspects are revealed in all their magnitude.
Thanasis Glavinas: “Arrogance and impunity”
In the context of his television appearance on the show “Studio with a view” of the ANT1 television station, the Press Representative of the PASOK Thanasis Glavinas spoke of political responsibility that must be taken, referring to the scandal of the leakage of confidential personal data of foreign voters through the Ministry of the Interior and of the Sectoral Leader Apodimon of New Democracy to the MEP of the ruling party, Anna Michele Asimakopoulou.
“There is a political responsibility and it must be taken. It is not only the objective responsibilities of the general secretary or some official of the ministry. It is clear that an issue is being raised for the Minister of the Interior” pointed out Mr. Glavinas and highlighted the antics of Niki Kerameos.
“A few days ago Ms. Kerameos assured us in a televised interview on ERT1 that the information has not left the Ministry of the Interior. They were leaked as evidenced by the Home Office. The government representative, Ministers such as Mr. Georgiadis and other government officials stated that everything is well done,” he pointed out.
Asked if there is a question about the process of postal voting in the European elections, Th. Glavinas noted: “Citizens’ trust in the functioning of the Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for conducting the elections, has already been eroded if someone can take classified information”.
“What’s 20,000 emails in the face of wiretapping”
“Safety barriers must be put in place against your arrogance and the prevailing impunity,” added Th. Glavinas, addressing the representative of New Democracy on the panel and pointed out that “we are waiting to see what justice and the authority for the protection of personal data will say taken over”.
“We have no confidence in you. Here you are “eavesdropping” on ministers, the head of the armed forces, the President of PASOK, won’t you get 20,000 emails? What’s 20,000 emails in the face of the wiretapping you’ve done!” he pointedly stated.
“The fulfillment of military service cannot be a show. Whoever Mr. Kasselakis is – also holding the institutional role of the leader of the official opposition -, he cannot enter the camp with the photographer, his security and watch his tenure live in the midst of serious problems for society . This is depoliticization, which leaves the New Democracy unscathed” commented the Spokesperson on the enlistment of the President of SYRIZA and the lifestyle opposition.
KKE: Government and the leadership of the Ministry of Interior are heavily exposed
“The ND government and the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior are heavily exposed to the leakage of the personal data of voters abroad.
Their responsibilities cannot be hidden either by the “withdrawal” of Mrs. Asimakopoulou from the ND’s European ballot paper, nor by the removal of some official agents and executives of the ND. And the excuses that the information was leaked during the caretaker government – just to keep Mrs. Kerameos and by extension the government itself – challenge the intelligence of the people,” the KKE points out in a statement.
Following his announcement he adds five questions that beg for answers: “The questions are relentless and they are not going to be avoided:
- First, how is it possible that personal data was leaked in May 2023 to be used 10 months later in the run up to the European elections?
- Secondly, what are the conditions for protecting voters’ personal data, when it is so easily leaked to specific parties?
- Thirdly, how is it possible to “exonerate” the current leadership of the Ministry of the Interior, when the complaints concern both the platform of national elections and that of postal voting? Furthermore, is it established that the postal vote notification message and Mrs. Asimakopoulou’s promotional message were sent a short time apart, which points to some sort of coordination?
- Fourth, how is it possible that all this is happening without the knowledge, if not the encouragement, of the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior? In any case there is a huge – at least political – responsibility. This responsibility is made even greater, because from the publication of the complaints of the electors – whose data was used – to the resignations, there were persistent and unacceptable statements of misdirection and expediency that point to a conscious and deliberate attempt to cover up responsibilities.
- Fifth, how is it possible for the government to reassure the people about postal voting, when by law the voters’ personal information will now be available not only to government agencies, but also to private companies and even foreign countries, which will handle the procedures of the postal vote? It should be noted that voters abroad do not even have the alternative of attending polling stations in person, since such stations are not provided for abroad.”
“These are issues related to the protection of the inviolability of the elections that the KKE had raised from the very beginning, based also on the negative international experience, when the ND government brought the bill for postal voting, initially having the support of SYRIZA and PASOK ” the party’s announcement also points out and concludes:
“Ms. Kerameos must answer these and many more questions. That is why the KKE, along with the rest of the investigation, intends to request the immediate convening of the Institutions and Transparency Committee of the Parliament, in order to explain the inexplicable.”
