The first black man to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor is dead.

Louis Gossett Jr‘s nephew confirms the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica, California. The cause of death is unclear.
Gossett Jr. became the first black man to win a Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He also won an Emmy for the mini-series “Roots”, which was a great success worldwide. He also won a Golden Globe for the same role.

The actor has appeared in a number of films and series such as “Jaws 3” from 1983 and “Enemy mine” from 1985. His last guest appearance was in the drama series “Kingdom business” from 2023.
