The four-year-old girl who suffered life-threatening injuries during gymnastics class in Antwerp Burcht is still in critical condition on Saturday. An investigating judge has been appointed to investigate the incident.
The accident happened around 11 a.m. on Friday. A four-year-old girl from the ‘bumba class’ of the Sint-Martinus school in Antwerp Burcht suffered life-threatening injuries during gymnastics class. According to the public prosecutor’s office, this happened when the child became stuck in gymnastics equipment, resulting in a lack of oxygen. Geert De Corte, general manager of Catholic Schools on the Scheldt, clarified that the incident happened during the ‘travel around the world’ game. The children had to complete an obstacle course in the gym.
A teacher and the director, who saw that something was wrong with the girl, immediately started resuscitation so that the child had sufficient oxygen until the emergency services arrived. “When he left for the UZA in Edegem, the emergency doctor reported that the child was still in critical condition, but that there was a stable heartbeat,” De Corte said on Friday.
A day later it turns out that the child is still in critical condition. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirmed this on Saturday. The public prosecutor’s office also says that an investigating judge has been appointed in an investigation that is provisionally qualified into unintentional assault and battery.
It can be heard within the school group that everyone is very affected. The school is also in close contact with the parents and the hospital to closely monitor the situation.
