“I was ready to take that step after the season I had at Ajax,” Kudus told the British medium. “I am a player who doesn’t want to be in my comfort zone. I could have stayed at Ajax. I knew the competition, I knew the club. But I don’t want to be complacent and comfortable. I always want to challenge myself.”

Kudus reveals that Arsenal, Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea were also angling for his services. “It’s true that they were in contact. But when West Ham came, things happened quickly and I made my decision based on conversations with people around the club, their project and how they see me as a player. I made the decision on based on my gut feeling. That’s how I make my decisions.”

The difference in level between the Eredivisie and the Premier League is large, Kudus believes. “Ajax was one of the biggest clubs in the competition and if you played at sixty, seventy percent, you would still win,” said Kudus. “But here even the small teams can surprise. I love it, it keeps me on my toes and that’s how I want it.”
