The cost estimate for the approximately 158 square meter new building exceeds the original budget by 185,000 euros.

Espoo is planning a dressing room worth almost one million euros on the shore of Lake Bodominjärvi.
On Tuesday, Espoo’s city government decided to present to the city council for approval the new construction project for the dressing rooms at Oitta’s swimming beach, the cost of which is estimated at 985,000 euros.
“Challenging conditions”
In the 2024 budget, 800,000 euros of Espoo taxpayers’ money was reserved for the project.
A cost estimate of almost one million euros was obtained through tendering based on five offers. Exceeding the budget by 185,000 euros is justified in the minutes of the city government by “challenging establishment conditions and difficult to predict earthworks costs”.
Developer of the city of Espoo Riikka Sippo-Hosion according to him, all queries and requests for information are answered at the same time and he does not comment on the matter “for everyone separately”.
On Tuesday, Sippo-Hosio commented to Helsingin Sanomat, which first reported on the matter, that the nearly one million building is not particularly expensive.
– The price level is what it is at the moment. We’ll go with what offers we get.
The approximately 158 square meter building is to include heated toilets and cleaning and technical facilities as well as unheated changing rooms and first aid and control rooms for summer use. In addition, there should be a waste and storage shed in connection with the building, the protocol states.
The changing facilities would serve the users of the beach as well as the playground, playground and jogging paths. At the moment, there are no permanent changing rooms and toilets on the beach.
What would you get for the money?
We compared what kind of apartments you could get on the market for the same money. For example, from the same city, “seaside” Souka, you would get such an architect Sami Paasin designed stone house for 950,000 euros:
Farther away from the capital region, in Oulu’s Sanginsuu, you could change your clothes at this local shop located on the Oulu River for the price of Oitta’s changing room:

You could get such a “delicate fort” from Päijänne’s beach for less than the cost estimate of Oitta’s dressing room:
However, Oittaa’s dressing room is no match for the 2.2 million smoke saunas planned for Kuusijärvi in Vantaa. In connection with the Kuusijärvi discussion, the deputy city manager Riikka Åstrand admitted to Vantaan Sanomat that the reasons for the amounts should have been disclosed more publicly.
However, Åstrand emphasized at the time that public construction planned for thousands of users cannot be compared to private construction.
