Tselentis at Documentonews.gr: We will have aftershocks of 4.5 Richter in Ilia for the next few weeks – 2024-03-30 12:21:07

The two earthquakes measuring 4.5 and 5.7 on the Richter scale that occurred today at 9:11 and 9:12 am in the Ionian sea area caused panic and concern in the wider region of Western Greece, and in particular in Ilia.

In his statements to Documentonews.gr, seismology professor Akis Tselentis stated that the epicenter of the two earthquakes was located in the sea area approximately 17 and 14 km east of Strofades and at a focal depth of 20 km.

«The area has seismic potential but I estimate it was the main earthquake and based on its history there won’t be a major seismic event. But for the next few weeks we will have aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or even 5 Richter” emphasized Mr. Tselentis.

In Ilia, the morning’s double earthquake caused great concern and panic, especially among the residents of Pyrgos, where it was particularly felt. Hundreds of citizens left their homes as a precaution and returned to them after about an hour.

By order of the deputy governor of Ilia, Nikos Korovesis, the building of the Regional Unit of Ilia was evacuated as a precaution, while all schools in the prefecture were also closed as a precaution.

«From the information so far we have no idea about damages. But we are in constant communication with the relevant services to help where needed. The Fire Service has already put out patrols in order to record if a problem is needed or to help the citizens– said Mr. Korovesis to Documentonews.gr.
