Taiwan Mobile to Cease 3G Network on June 30: Free VoLTE SIM Card Replacement Offered

Taiwan Mobile welcomes this new era of power saving and plans to shut down the 3G network on June 30, 2024. After the shutdown on June 30, the 2100MHz frequency band of the original 3G network of Taiwan Mobile will be converted to 4G or 4G based on demand. The use of 5G, after increasing the bandwidth, can enhance the user’s Internet experience and enjoy VoLTE high-quality call services.

Taiwan Mobile will stop 3G users on June 30. VoLTE SIM cards can be replaced for free. The 2100MHz frequency band of the original 3G network will be converted to 4G or 5G according to demand.

Since 2016, Taiwan Mobile has advocated co-frequency, co-network, and co-construction of network infrastructure in order to achieve the best energy-saving and carbon-reducing benefits for the telecommunications industry. After that, it has planned to shut down the 3G network on June 30, 2024. Approved by the National Communications and Communications Commission, after the integration of dual networks, up to about 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity can be saved every year, and voice calls will be replaced by 4G voice services (VoLTE, Voice over LTE). Taiwan Mobile has been encouraging users since the beginning of 2024 to change SIM cards that support VoLTE for free at Taiwan Mobile myfone stores, and has launched a 0 yuan VoLTE project with a minimum monthly payment of 149 yuan, which can take away many models such as Motorola e13 and Hugiga V8 VoLTE mobile phone.

The store protects user rights and supports free replacement of VoLTE SIM cards. Prepaid card users will receive NT$300 in airtime credits.

When the 3G network is closed, voice calls will be replaced by VoLTE, a 4G voice service. Users can enjoy clear and high-quality voice call services. In order to protect the rights and interests of users, Taiwan Mobile has successively assisted users to actively activate VoLTE. Users who have not yet activated it can activate it by themselves through the store/customer service/Taiwan Mobile Customer Service APP. At the same time, users who use VoLTE services also need to confirm whether the SIM card and mobile phone they hold support VoLTE technology. If the SIM card does not support VoLTE, Taiwan Mobile provides users with free card replacement at the store. Prepaid card users can also receive NT$300 for domestic calls (given on the 20th of the month following the new card’s effectiveness).

VoLTE mobile phone project prices start at 0 yuan, with discounts up to 5,000 yuan for selected models.

For monthly rental users who have not yet used a VoLTE mobile phone and are eligible for renewal, Taiwan Mobile has launched a renewal and replacement discount. If you apply for a designated project and pay a monthly payment starting from 149 yuan, you can take away a 4G mobile phone that supports VoLTE at the project price of 0 yuan. Including Motorola e13, Hugiga V8 and other models. At the same time, Taiwan Mobile also provides users who have not yet replaced their VoLTE mobile phones to enjoy a discount of up to NT$5,000 on a single purchase of designated models. Taiwan Mobile will also send regular text messages to remind users who have not yet changed their VoLTE-enabled SIM cards and mobile phones to go to a store or call 188 customer service staff as soon as possible to inquire about related supporting solutions. Shut down the 3G network to improve spectrum utilization efficiency and combine the dual network integration to save about 200 million kWh of electricity annually.

Considering that shutting down 3G voice networks is an international technology development trend, which will help improve frequency usage efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability, the National Communications Commission (NCC) resolved on March 6 this year to approve the closure of three telecommunications companies in June this year. The 3G voice network will be shut down on March 30th. Taiwan Mobile’s suspension of 3G and the closure of Taiwan Star 3G at the end of last year will save about 94 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and reduce about 47,000 tons of carbon emissions. At the same time, after Taiwan Mobile merges with Taiwan Star, it will carry out 4G/5G dual Network consolidation, including the demolition of duplicate 4G deployment sites, the introduction of smart energy-saving equipment, and the use of AI to reduce power consumption. During the operation process, power consumption was significantly reduced. If calculated in terms of long-term potential power savings, compare the telecommunications infrastructure of the two companies. Operating separately, a total of approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity can be saved each year, which translates to a carbon reduction of up to 100,000 tons, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 258 Daan Forest Parks, accelerating the move towards the 2050 net-zero emission goal.
