On Monday, the Central Election Commission (CEC) registered Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who is being nominated for the presidency of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), as a participant in the political campaign.
I. Šimonytė is the tenth registered participant of the political campaign, who intends to participate in the May presidential elections.
In the presidential elections, political campaign participants can be registered by the parties nominating candidates, or by the candidates themselves, independently or at the party’s request.
Registration of political campaign participants will end on February 19. Those who have not registered as political campaign participants will not be able to participate in the elections.
The presidential elections in Lithuania will be held on May 12 this year.
The current leader of the country Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, the former Minister of Health Protection nominated by the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union, Member of the Seimas Aurelijus Veryga, the former Deputy Minister of National Defense nominated by the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” and the Deputy Secretary General of NATO Giedrim Jeglinskas have already been registered as participants in the political campaign.
The Freedom Party nominates the former Chairman of the Constitutional Court Dainius Žalim, the Labor Party – Chairman Andrias Mazuronis.
Lawyer Ignas Vēgėlė, former army commander Valdas Tutkus, doctor Eduardas Vaitkus, and Zenon Andrulėnas have announced their candidacies in the elections and registered as participants in the political campaign.
The chairman of the newly formed party “Nemunos aushra”, MP Remigijus Žemaitaitis, announced that he is running for the post of president.
